Hello, everybody! Today - the first post in a while, sorry! - I shall talk about how my life has changed in the past month. Let's begin…
On Friday, 3 November, at 5pm, I was rushed into hospital with diabetic ketoacidosis - or DKA - a condition which, had it been left perhaps even a single week longer, may have killed me. I was severely dehydrated and so was put on a drip while A&E doctors took my heart rate, blood and blood pressure.
The hospital team managed to get me up to the paediatric ward at about 9pm and put me on IV insulin. I didn't have much sleep that night due to hourly observations; not that I could fault the nurses in any way, as they were doing their absolute best to keep me alive.
In my 'return from the summer holidays' post, I mentioned that "I also found out that I lost a ton of weight (not a literal tonne!) over the summer holidays!" The thought of what it really meant… it's quite unnerving.
Anyway, I spent the next four days after that in the hospital. My appetite, which over the past week had diminished into almost nonexistence, had returned by Saturday lunchtime. After seeing the diabetic nurses and dietician - all of whom are amazing, I might add! - I was discharged from hospital on Tuesday afternoon.
It was such a relief to be home at last! I had started my own insulin injections on Saturday evening, and was still getting the hang of them. Through my hospital stay, my Novorapid (fast-acting insulin) dose changed from 11 units to 12 and then to 13, where it still stays; my long-acting nighttime insulin was first changed from 22 units of Levemir to 25 units of Degludec, then to 27. (It was later changed to 29, then to 30 units of Degludec starting last Friday, where it is now.)
Since leaving hospital, my life has fallen back into a routine - I will admit that it's not as different as it should be, but it is different from before - there are improvements in what I have been eating, and that can be seen in my blood sugar levels.
I feel so much better than I did at the beginning of last month - long may that last!
That's all I have to say for today. I'll see you all in eight days' time for Christmas - so bye for now!
