[26/02/17] Week Overview: Computer Calamity

Hello there, everybody! Today, I shall explain what's shaken up our house this past week…
(Or if not the house, it did stress me out!)

*ahem*
…We might as well begin.

Tuesday, 21 February 2017

It was the first day back at school after the half-term holidays. (There's been some discrepancies between various counties of England this year over half-terms, but my school was off last week.)
I turned on the computer, opened Google Chrome, navigated to YouTube and began to watch a video… and what gets shoved in my face but the Blue Screen of Death.

I let the computer collect its data it needed - but when it booted back up? The computer gave us a message: "You've been logged on with a temporary account."

What.

I went on my iPad and checked Google for a solution - one popped up and I gave it to my dad to help him fix the computer… but it was unfixable.

Come Wednesday, I was really irritated with the computer. I even downloaded a program called 'Reprofiler' that was meant to solve the issue… but as I'm sure you can guess, nothing happened. By the time I went to bed, I was completely out of ideas. The only idea I had left was to re-install Windows.

Friday, 24 February 2017

Now for Friday. I came home after school and set to work trying to fix the computer. I found an additional step to the first fix - so I performed it, and

Nothing changed.

But then I observed in interesting piece of information about a file called NTUSER.DAT. It stores user information and preferences, etc.

So I tried this: do the first fix, with the additional step… and also replace the NTUSER.DAT file from the first folder with the new folder!

And

It worked!!

And that's the story of how I fixed a broken computer. I thought for a second about how that could help me with my IT Functional Skills exam.

Then I realised it has nothing do do with what I've done.
Anyway, that's all from me for today. See you next week, everybody!
