[31/10/16] Halloween!

Hello, everybody! Yep, it's that time of the year again, when young children dress up in costumes and go sweet-hunting, when adults go to parties and when I may or may not be making a videogame reference. Here's a hint: think deadly unicorns.

Halloween. That time when everybody goes crazy about pumpkins. (Well, pumpkins, ghosts, witches, vampires, etc. Basically anything creepy.) I've never been really into it... most likely because it isn't that big here in England - it's definitely nowhere near as big as it is over in Ireland.

Of course, a quick recap of Halloween's history is always useful. There was All Hallows' Eve - the night before All Hallows' Day, much like Christmas Eve is before Christmas Day. It was the night when people believed the souls of the dead would return to this world. (Poetic!)

So, uh... skipping over most of the details here, it eventually spread to many places. (So descriptive, I know!) Its name was contracted into Halloween and it was successfully commercialised.

Anyways, back to the present. Halloween isn't really that big over here - celebrations for it don't really happen. Oh, we still get fireworks around this time. Here in England, we have Bonfire Night (or Guy Fawkes Night) on 5 November. We're supposed to have a local fireworks event for that each year, but it frequently gets delayed because of the weather. - last year, to the point of cancellation.

Also, I know it's most likely really obvious, but I'll just mention that the paragraph was meant for people who don't live in England.

On a somewhat related note, we have been getting some fireworks already. The rest of my family thinks it's to do with Diwali. I, on the other hand, have absolutely no idea. But that's all from me for today, so...

Happy Halloween, everybody!

(Also, a cool fact: we had no night between 24 May and 19 July, if going by the astronomical definition. See you all on Sunday!)
