Welcome to the first Science News post! (There's an announcement about the blog at the bottom of the post.) Let's get going!
On Wednesday, 8 June, names were proposed for the four newest elements (numbers 113, 115, 117 & 118.) They are as follows:
Nihonium - Nh (Element 113)
This name references the name of Japan in the Japanese language (Nihon) - this is because it was discovered in Japan, at the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator Science..
Moscovium - Mc (Element 115)
As can be inferred, the name moscovium references Moscow. The element was discovered in Dubna, near Moscow, at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. It already has an element named after it: dubnium (element 105).
Tennessine - Ts (Element 117)
Named after the US state of Tennessee, it is the heaviest know halogen (member of group 17) and its discovery had contributions made to it by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Vanderbill University
Oganesson - Og (Element 118)
This element's proposed name honours the nuclear physicist Yuri Oganessian. He was a major part of the team who discovered the element - the name could make it the second element ever to be named after a person while they're still alive!
Keep in mind that these proposals are just that: proposals. For the next six months, they'll be under review, but if everything goes well, then the names will be officially applied to the elements. I look forward to seeing if they pass!
-BLOG NEWS-
I had intended to post on Friday about the new game, Kirby: Planet Robobot, but I decided that I will not do Game Release posts. Sorry for any confusion this might've caused, and I hope to see everyone next week! Bye for now!
