Current Stories - 28 Feb 2016

Hello everybody! I hope this day is treating you well. I'm in a good mood myself, so let's get this post going!

Large space rock burns up over Atlantic

It's not every day you hear about one of these. Interestingly, they state that about 30 small asteroids burn up in Earth's atmosphere every year. I wouldn't have thought that many asteroids enter the atmosphere, but truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.

Radio flash tracked to faraway galaxy

So it's the first time we've found the source of one of these fast radio bursts - stated as 'fleeting explosions of radio waves' on the news article. This particular one came from a galaxy 6 billion light years away. Just think - those photons formed even before our Solar System, took six billion years to reach us, and we happened to have our detectors on at the right time to find them. Cool!

Milky Way gas survey completed

To me at least, this is the most interesting story of our three today. Scientists with the Apex telescope in the Atacama Desert (which is in Chile) have mapped the Milky Way in a new way. This time, they've found all of the dense gases are in our galaxy - nebulae that form stars when they inevitably collapse in on themselves. Indeed, our Sun and even Earth itself were directly formed by a nebular collapse. I'm looking forward to the ways astronomy develops in the future!

And those are our stories for today. Now, we reach these multiple italic words:
"It's okay to have whatever interests you want. If you don't like something, there's no need to pretend to like it. Be the person who you want to be!"
Well, that's all I have to say for today. See you on Friday for the Overview of my Week!
